What Is MySpace?

Meeting new people has become as easy as turning on your computer.  You can find new friends from all around the world and communicate with them in unique ways using MySpace’s vast range of features.  Based in Beverly Hills, California, MySpace is owned by Fox Interactive Media and employs over 1000 employees.

What Is MySpace All About?

If you are wondering what is MySpace, a simple answer is: a way to meet and communicate with people.  There is much more to it than that.  You create a profile with a username, your name, or a play on words of your real name.  The amount of personal information seen by others is completely up to you.  A very minimal amount is needed to create an account, but many choose to go wild entering information about all aspects of their life.  MySpace is also a great place to post and share pictures and videos.  There are millions of potential new friends on the site daily.  It is also a fantastic way to find out about new music, movies, hobbies, and more.

History

A company called eUniverse saw how popular Friendster was after its launch in 2002 and wanted to build a new social networking site using only the best parts of Friendster.  In 2003, they created MySpace in a mere ten days.  At first, only eUniverse employees had accounts and they had contests to see who could get the most new users to sign up.  MySpace quickly became the most popular social networking website in the US.  What is MySpace doing to accommodate the rest of the world?  Well, in 2006, they expanded and started new MySpace sites in the UK, China, and other countries.

Features

The unique ‘Mood’ feature on MySpace allows you to describe your current mood with a word and a tiny emoticon and appears right under your main profile picture.  The main profile page contains the user’s ‘Details’ and ‘Interests’ sections along with short blurbs about the user.  The user’s latest blog entries are also visible on the home page.  There is also a ‘Friend Space’ and a ‘Friends Comments’ message board.  In addition, the different options to contact the user are included on this main page.

There are endless options available to personalize this home page.  Thousands of sites have been created that specialize on different layout options, wall themes, and other add-ons that allow individualization that most other social networking sites don’t offer.  In the early days, to customize their pages, one would need to do it using HTML.  Now, you can get any add-on imaginable via different sites on the web.  At present, MySpace offers a Profile 2.0 option that allows all users a sleeker version with amazing features.

What is MySpace doing about kids who want an account?  It’s simple.  A member needs to be 13 years of age or older to create an account.  Members who are between the ages of 13 and 15 have default private accounts and the public cannot view their accounts.
