IP Spoofing Software and How It Works

IP spoofing in lay man terms is the process by which someone gains access to computers in an unauthorized fashion through IP addresses.  This is done through IP spoofing software.  Using this kind of software, the hacker/hijacker can send messages to a computer as if it is being sent by a host that can be trusted.  The process however is not as simple as the definition sounds.  In order to be successful, the hijacker needs to first be able to find a host that can be modified.

How it Works

With the help of IP spoofing software, an intruder gains root access to the computer in question.  Once this is done the hijacker can now take undue advantage of any application that uses IP addresses as a method of authentication.  Once they have made these modifications, the online security of every person who uses the system is compromised.  The systems that are the most prone to this kind of attack are the ones that use SunOS 4.1.x; however the characteristics that make this OS vulnerable are not unique to this operating system.

The Effect

The effect of IP spoofing software is widely known.  The way it stands right now, is that if an IP address or a system is compromised, the hijacker gains access and then takes over the terminal along with the login connections.  Once this happens, an intruder can access remote hosts.  The negatives resulting are nearly endless.

How Can You Prevent It?

The only way to stopping IP spoofing software from taking over your computer is prevention.  You need to ensure that your computer has a filtering system installed.  The input filter in the system will restrict the information that is sent to the external interface.  This keeps all information from internal networks safe.  Similar things can be done for information that leaves your computer.

There is software on the market that can help prevent spoofing as well.  PhishGuard has its latest versions out for Firefox and Internet Explorer.  It also has a version that can be used on all popular browsers.  These programs work by disabling all potential attacks against your computer.  The other popular software that one can try is Expresso.  This software is very effective in eliminating email spam and therefore any potential threats to your system.
