URL is an acronym, meaning Uniform Resource Locator.  It is found towards the end of the website address or what is technically known as the domain name.  For example, let’s look at the website yahoo.com.  For this site, “yahoo” is the domain name, while the final part - “.com” is the URL extension.  All websites have a URL extension, and such a list of URL extensions helps to identify the category to which a website belongs to.  In many cases, you can also tell the country from which the websites originates, for e.g. “.ca” refers to Canada, “.de” refers to Germany, “.fr” refers to France, “.in” refers to India, and so on.

The more commonly used URL extensions are “.org” for organizations, “.com” for commercial business enterprises and “.gov” for websites that are related to the government.  Now, the list of URL extensions also includes “.info”, “.biz”, “.cc”, “.us” and “.tv”.
